Higher Education Systems Development in Greece
Greece is a small country in South-Eastern Europe with a population of 11 million people. It has a low technology-intensive economy dominated by small and medium size enterprises, which are oriented towards a medium and low skilled workforce. Since 2010, Greece has been undergoing a financial crisis, which has had profound effects on social matters including higher education. Higher education is considered to be one of the main missions of the Greek state, and article 16 of the Greek Constitution stipulates that all Greeks have the right to free education at all levels.
The Greek higher education (HE) system, introduced in 1836/7, was based on the German model and had the general education of students as its primary goal. The university was not an autonomously governed institution but was supervised and monitored by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, currently called the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs...
