The expectation that universities take deliberate steps to contribute to technological innovation and economic growth has gained a commonsense status among policy makers. Governments’ efforts to galvanize the relationship between universities and industry over the past 40 years have been largely unquestioned and show no sign of receding. During this period, universities have progressively engaged more overtly with industry, leaving behind a more traditional conception of the ivory tower. Enthusiasts believe this represents a transition in the mission and outlook of universities; critics view this trend suspiciously, as a signal of the erosion of universities’ public missions and traditional academic values.
