Expansion of Targeted Hydrophobic Compounds Using a Modifier

As previously described, SC–CO2 is a suitable medium to extract hydrophobic compounds. On the other hand, complex lipids (e.g., phospholipids, PLs, and glycolipids, GLs) have higher polarity than neutral lipids (e.g., TAG), because they have a hydrophilic head groups (i.e., phosphate groups or sugars). Therefore, extraction efficiencies of complex lipids are lower than that of neutral lipids by SFE with SC–CO2. However, the polarity of SC–CO2can be changed considerably by adding a polar organic solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc., as a modifier.
