General Methods in Biomarker Research and their Applications

Abstract

This chapter reviews current knowledge and literature on urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) as a biomarker of environmental and occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and potential applications of 1-OHP to prognosis for diseases or other health conditions. Intra- and interindividual variations in urinary 1-OHP, kinetics of metabolism and excretion of 1-OHP, and correlations between urinary 1-OHP and PAH concentrations were presented to address whether urinary 1-OHP can serve as a reliable biomarker of exposure to PAHs. The evidence of PAH-associated disease and health effects and 1-OHP associations in humans was summarized and discussed to determine potential applications of urinary 1-OHP for prognosis and as an indicator of diseases and health conditions associated with PAH exposure.
