Abstract
The Yellow River is the second largest river in China. It originates in the Yueguzonglie Basin, on the northern flank of the Bayan Har Mountains of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, at an altitude of 4500 m. Encompassing a drainage area of 795,000 km2, the Yellow River’s main channel is 5464 km in length with an average natural discharge of 53.48 billion m3. The Yellow River has both the highest sediment discharge and highest sediment concentration in the world. The total area of wetland in the Yellow River basin is 2.5135 Mha, and primarily comprised of marsh (45.0 %) and riverine wetlands (36.2 %). This chapter describes the wetlands distributed in sections within the Yellow River basin, including the source and upstream, the Hetao Plain, midstream and downstream, and the Yellow River Delta. Further, the chapter identifies the challenges faced by the wetlands along the Yellow River.
