Abstract
Fereydoon Kenar Ramsar Site or “Fereydoon Kenar, Ezbaran & Sorkh Ruds Ab-Bandans” (abbreviated to FDK) occupies a total area of 5,427 ha, situated on the coastal plain of the South Caspian, just south of the town of Fereydoon Kenar and 13 km southwest of Babolsar, in the province of Mazandaran. This site (36°40′N, 52°33′E), including the rice fields, is also a non-shooting area (NSA). The area includes four “damgahs” or duck-trapping areas (Fereydoon Kenar, Ezbaran, East and West Sorkh Ruds) and a small wildlife refuge (Fereydoon Kenar WR, 48 ha.) located in the northeastern part of the area. Each damgah consists of a complex of shallow freshwater impoundments situated in harvested rice paddies which have been developed as a duck-trapping area, surrounded by forest strips and reed enclosures. The area is of outstanding importance as the only known overwintering quarters of the western population of the Siberian crane (), but also extremely important as a wintering area for many other species of waterbird, notably dabbling ducks (Anas spp.) and gray geese (Anser spp.).
