Abstract
Bahr el Ghazal is one five sub-basins of the River Nile. It is the only one that originates in the Sudan and is one of largest tropical wetlands in the World. It is rich in biodiversity. The area, rich in ecosystem services, has been traditional and historically shared amicably by the Dinka Noke of Abyei and the transhumant Myesseria cattle owning tribe, for their subsistence livelihoods. After the cessation of South Sudan, in 2011, it became a contested area between the two countries.
An additional threat to the integrity of the sub-basin is oil development on both sides of the borders.
Understanding how the wetlands function will enable both countries to made maximum use of its values and services and would be a step in the right direction in conflict resolution.
