Introduction
Cuba has a complicated history which has shaped its landscape and impacted its people in many ways. Due to its geographical location as an island in the Caribbean it has had an extraordinary level of dependence on its lands and natural resources for commerce and trade as well as support of its people. Cuba’s landscape is highly heterogeneous including high mountains, steep grades, long low grassy fields historically used for grazing animals and wide flat expanses with rich soils that have been used extensively for agriculture. The land use practices on the island have varied quite significantly over time ranging from a focus on cattle, tobacco and sugar.
