Abstract

This is a complex wetland area of northern Greece encompassing the mouths of rivers, riverbeds and lagoons, in close proximity to Thessaloniki, the second largest city and the second most important harbour in the country. It offers major ecosystem services and despite this proximity and the major hydraulic works in the 20th century, it is still an area of beauty, of high biodiversity value, and home to many important species, primarily birds and fish. More than 290 bird species, of which some are globally threatened, and more than 80 species of fish including a Greek endemic are reported from the area. There are several designations for this important delta complex: a Ramsar Site, a national park, and a number of Natura 2000 sites and wildlife refuges. Current threats make the management of the Axios, Aliakmon and Gallikos Delta complex a challenging goal.
