Reference work entry

Abstract

The U Minh region contains the largest peat swamp areas in the Mekong River basin. U Minh peat swamp forests are currently protected in two national parks: U Minh Thuong (3,000 ha) and U Minh Ha (9,800 ha). Both national parks are Important Bird Areas of Vietnam. These peat swamps are important sources of freshwater and fish for local consumption. Forest fire is the main threat for U Minh peat swamp forests.
