Abstract

The Philippi peatland is located in the intermontane Drama basin in northern Greece. The mire occupied an area of 274 km2 before drainage in the 1940s. A drilling project carried out in the 1960s proved that the thickness of the peat alternating with other limnic and limnotelmatic sediments reaches up to 190 m. Plans to exploit the upper part of the peatland for power generation, were canceled due to the lack of social acquiescence. After drainage the area started being cultivated with maize, tobacco and sugar beet but the intensive cultivation caused severe soil subsidence and flooding.
