Abstract
Wetland management has over the past few decades shifted strongly toward a focus on ensuring the sustainable development of individual sites and suites of wetlands across landscapes. This considers the multiple uses of wetlands and the increasing demands for the ecosystem services they provide. The concept of sustainable development has a long history in both the development and environmental literature and can be considered as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to to meet their owns needs. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands recognizes that the conservation and wise use of all wetlands contributes towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world. Therefore, sustainable development is at the heart of the global wise use of wetlands.
