Play and Well-Being in Children’s Life

Handbook of Child Well-Being

Abstract

While describing play, the developmental and the cultural approach can be distinguished. They can be placed on a continuum and they are complementary. In play practice, they often are mixed up. Children are familiar with both. There are different forms of play that more or less are linked to the age of children. Children’s play can be influenced: it can be promoted and it can be inhibited. The factors of promotion and inhibition can be linked on to the promotion or inhibition of children’s well-being. While some basics of well-being have to be realized before children are able to play, several aspects of play do contribute to children’s well-being, more especially to children’s subjective well-being.
