Zusammenfassung
Die Kardinäle sind eine recht heterogene Vogelgruppe mit derzeit anerkannten 51 Arten in 11 Gattungen. Kardinäle gehören zu den 9-Handschwingen-Singvögeln. Ihre nächsten Verwandten sind die Tangaren (Thraupidae), die Ammern (Emberizidae) und die Finken (Fringillidae) (Burns et al. 2016).
