Zusammenfassung

Mit sechs Arten in drei Gattungen, die in der einzigen Familie Phoenicopteridae zusammengefasst sind, bilden die Flamingos eine der kleinsten Vogelordnungen. Mit einer Gesamtgröße von 120–145 cm sind Kubaflamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) und Rosaflamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) die größten Arten (Abb. 1). Der Zwergflamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) mit nur 80–90 cm Größe ist die kleinste Art. Laut neuester genetischer Studien sind die Flamingos am ehesten mit den Lappentauchern (Podicipediformes) verwandt (Torres und van Tuinen 2017).
