Zusammenfassung
Die Ordnung Charadriiformes setzt sich aus 19 Familien zusammen, die sich noch einmal aufteilen in 89 Gattungen und 376 Arten, worunter sich 5 bereits ausgestorbene Arten und eine Unterart befinden. Die Regenpfeiferartigen werden in systematischer Nähe der Ordnung Suliformes eingestuft, zu der die Tölpel (Sulidae), die Fregattvögel (Fregatidae), Kormorane (Phalacrocoracidae) und die Schlangenhalsvögel (Anhingidae) gezählt werden, sowie der Ordnung Strigiformes (Eulen) (del Hoyo und Collar 2014). Im deutschen Sprachgebrauch finden für die Vogelgruppe der Regenpfeiferartigen häufig die Bezeichnungen Limikolen beziehungsweise Watvögel Anwendung. In der zurückliegenden Zeit wurden Angehörige der Ordnung Charadriiformes in die 3 Unterordnungen Watvögel, Möwenvögel und Alkenvögel aufgeteilt; gelegentlich wurde diese auch als eigene Ordnung angesehen. Neuere phylogenetische Untersuchungen ergaben jedoch, dass innerhalb der Charadriiformes lediglich 3 Hauptlinien vorhanden sind, die in enger verwandtschaftlicher Beziehung zueinander allesamt dieser Ordnung zugehörig sind (Harshman und Brown 2008).
