Zusammenfassung
Die Influenza zählt in Deutschland zu den gefährlichsten Infektionskrankheiten überhaupt. Trotz verfügbarer Impfstoffe erkranken allein in Deutschland in jedem Winter Millionen von Menschen an Influenza und je nach Schwere der Epidemie versterben jährlich mehrere tausend von ihnen daran. Aufgrund genetischer Besonderheiten verändert sich das Influenzavirus permanent, welches eine stetige Anpassung der Impfstoffe und jährliche Schutzimpfungen notwendig macht. Da insbesondere ältere Menschen, chronisch Kranke, Immunsupprimierte und Schwangere ein signifikant erhöhtes Risiko aufweisen, komplizierte Krankheitsverläufe zu entwickeln und infolge einer Influenzainfektion zu versterben, wird diesem Personenkreis eine jährliche Grippeimpfung empfohlen. Impfquoten von mindestens 75 % der Gesamtbevölkerung könnten eine Herdenimmunität aufbauen, die die Ausbreitung des Virus verhindern und so zum Schutz besonders vulnerabler Risikogruppen beitragen würde. Derzeit sind wir in Deutschland jedoch weit von einer solchen Impfquote entfernt.
