Definition
The cemented carbides are a range of powder-metallurgical composite materials, which consist of hard carbide particles bonded together by a metallic binder (Sandvik Hard Materials 2012). The proportion of carbide phase is generally between 70% and 97% of the total weight of the composite and its grain size averages between 0.4 and 10 μm. In cemented carbides, these hard particles are mainly tungsten carbides (WC) compared to cermets (TiC, TaC, NiC) or ceramics where metal oxides or nitrites are used.
