Zusammenfassung
Adipositas ist durch eine Zunahme der Fettgewebsmasse charakterisiert. Diese beruht entweder auf einer Hypertrophie der vorhandenen Fettzellen oder einer Kombination aus Fettzellhypertrophie und -hyperplasie. Jede Gewichtszunahme führt dabei zunächst zu einer Volumenzunahme der vorhandenen Adipozyten. Ab einer kritischen Zellgröße kommt es durch bislang noch nicht identifizierte Signale, die wahrscheinlich von den vergrößerten Fettzellen selbst stammen, zur Rekrutierung von Vorläuferzellen und Bildung neuer Fettzellen.
