Encyclopedia of Membranes

Advanced oxidation process (AOP) by membrane reactors is a synergistic hybrid of hydroxyl radical reaction and membrane filtration in a single reactor. Advanced oxidation process (AOP) is the uncontrolled, destructive action of hydroxyl radicals generated from ozone, H2O2, ultraviolet radiation, Fenton reaction, electrolysis, sonolysis, and photocatalysis (e.g., TiO2). AOP is most widely used for the decomposition of nonbiodegradable organic contaminants present in industrial and municipal wastewaters. It can be also applied for the degradation of micro-contaminants and taste-and-odor causing compounds in drinking water sources, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, microcystins, geosmin, etc. Although micro-/ultrafiltration membranes are almost complete barriers for particulate matter and pathogens in water, they are limited in removing dissolved organic compounds. Thus, the coupling of membrane filtration with AOP in a reactor provides multifunctionalities and...
