Basic membrane process configurations include single-pass, batch, fed-batch, and continuous operation (Fig. 1). Single-pass operation involves a single pass of feed through the module feed channel where it exists as sufficiently concentrated retentate. This requires a long residence time in the modules using long feed channels and/or low feed flow rates. Component concentrations change along the length of the retentate channel. Analysis starts with the steady-state component and solvent mass balances as shown in the Table 1. These consider an incremental area element, dA, in the axial or flow direction for a feed channel, module, or membrane assembly of constant width. Constant density is also assumed. Combining the balance equations and integrating yields a relation between concentrations, volume reduction, and solute passage.
