This spirurid species has been observed in dogs from Europe as well as in several carnivores from the USA. Since in most cases no or low-graded symptoms of disease occur (with the exception of mild or severe ocular lesions), knowledge of this parasite remained scarce. However, in recent years cases of human onchocercosis have been detected in Iran, Turkey, Tunisia, and the USA. Therefore, the development of serological methods to diagnose this peculiar worm is recommended.
