This is the abbreviation for the inner membrane complex of the so-called pellicle of apicomplexan asexual motile stages such as sporozoites, merozoites, tachyzoites, bradyzoites, and cystozoites, which consists of two adjacent membranes (formed by flattened ER lacunes) and attached species-specific numbers of subpellicular microtubules. The IMC of gametocytes and that of all types of zoites contains several distinct proteins: alveolins, multitransmembrane proteins, glideosome-associated proteins 45 and 50, myosin A, and myosin-A-tail interacting protein.
