Name

Greek: acantha = spine; cheilos = lip; nema = thread

General Information

The species of the genus of the so-called Filarioidea (subfamily Onchocercidae) are distributed worldwide. Their adults live inside the connective tissues of dogs and relatives respectively in rodents. The unsheathed microfilariae are found in the blood or in the skin of the final hosts, from where they were taken up during blood sucking of species-specific blood suckers such as ticks, fleas, lice, or louse flies.

    A. reconditum: Adult worms parasitize in the subcutis of canids (prevalence rates up to 55 %), microfilariae are found in the blood, and vectors are fleas and mallophages. Distribution: South Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.

    A. viteae: Adult worms parasitize in the subcutaneous tissue of rodents (Meriones), larvae are found in the blood, and vectors are argasid ticks; distribution in deserts.
