Migration, Ethnizität und „Rasse“

Theoretische Perspektiven in der „race and ethnic relations“-Forschung

Zusammenfassung

In diesem Kapitel wird ausgehend von den Arbeiten von W.E.B. Du Bois die Verwendung der Begriffe „Rasse“ und Ethnizität in der „race and ethnic relations“-Forschung beschrieben. Analytisch lassen sich die Begriffe unter den Perspektiven der individuellen Identifikation, der Struktur sozialer Ungleichheit und den Großgruppenvorstellungen explizieren. Aktuell werden rassische und ethnische Mitgliedschaften unter den Aspekten Kultur, Grenzen und Gruppen ebenso diskutiert wie „Rasse“ und Ethnizität als Ausdruck historisch gewachsener gesellschaftlicher Strukturen und deren Verbindung mit Globalisierungsprozessen. Das Kapitel endet mit einigen Bemerkungen zur Verwendung der Begriffe „Rasse“ und Ethnizität in den USA und Deutschland.

Um die Distanz zum Begriff „Rasse“ zu zeigen, der im Deutschen stark mit der aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht unhaltbaren biologisch bzw. kulturell begründeten Über- und Unterordnung von Menschengruppen und dem Nationalsozialismus assoziiert ist, wird dieser im Folgenden in Anführungszeichen gesetzt.

Eine Einführung in unterschiedliche Konzeptualisierungen von Ethnizität im Kontext klassischer soziologischer Theorierichtungen bietet Maleševic The sociology of ethnicity (2004). Eine historische Rekonstruktion der Begriffsverwendung in den USA und der amerikanischen Soziologie gibt Bös Rasse und Ethnizität: Zur Problemgeschichte zweier Begriffe in der amerikanischen Soziologie (2005). Einen Überblick über aktuelle Diskussionen bieten Murji und Solomos in Theories of race and ethnicity: contemporary debates and perspectives (2015). Bekannte Sammlungen von Originaltexten sind Sollors’ Theories of ethnicity: a classical reader (1996) bzw. Hutchinson und Smith Ethnicity – Oxford Readers (1996). Einschlägige deutschsprachige Überblickswerke sind deutlich seltener, beispielhaft seien genannt Müller und Zifonun Ethnowissen (2010) bzw.     In soziologischen Untersuchungen zu Ungleichheiten ist es oft schwierig, die „Variable“ Ethnizität bzw. „Rasse“ angemessen zu operationalisieren; dies liegt zum einen an der nicht ganz einfachen Definition der Begriffe, zum anderen daran, dass Kausalmechanismen in Bezug auf „Rasse“ und Ethnizität (besonders als „unabhängige Variable“) nur schwer zu formulieren sind, für einen kurzen Abriss der methodischen Probleme vgl.     Auch wenn erste Verlautbarungen aus dem „Human Genome Project“ mit dem Ergebnis, dass 99,9 % des menschlichen Genoms gleich sind, den Möglichkeiten einer biologischen Unterfütterung des Rassebegriffs entgegenstehen, gibt es durchaus Ansätze, etwa über die Herkunftsbestimmung durch Gentests soziale Kategorisierungen wieder zu biologisieren, Versuche, die aber in Bezug auf die Ableitung von Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen oder gar kulturellen Gruppenmerkmalen als nicht haltbar gelten (Frank 2015). Außerhalb der Sozialwissenschaften gibt es eine Zunahme von Kategorisierungen wie „Rassen“ bzw. „Kontinentalgruppen“ etwa in den Lebenswissenschaften, vgl. hierzu Plümecke (2013), wobei es nicht möglich ist, von einer einzigen biologischen Perspektive auf „Rassen“ zu sprechen. So zeigen sich in der zunehmenden Bedeutung epigenetischer Untersuchungen eher die biologischen Grundlagen der hohen Flexibilität von genetischen Prozessen (Meloni 2017).

    Selbst wenn konzeptionell von einer grundsätzlichen Differenz der Begriffe „Rasse“ und Ethnizität zu sprechen ist, dann wäre trotzdem gerade der postkolonialen Analyse von Grosfoguel zuzustimmen (2004), dass wir zunehmend in einer Welt der „racialized ethnicities“ and „ethnicized races“ leben.

    Es könnten noch weitere Diskriminierungseffekte erforscht werden, wie die in den Fünfzigerjahren erforschte Entwertung des Selbstbildes afroamerikanischer Mädchen, die lieber mit weißen als mit schwarzen Puppen spielten (Clark 1988 [1955]), wobei hier die Relevanz des Einflusses einer spezifischen Ereignisinszenierung auf das Selbstbild immer diskutabel ist.
