Zusammenfassung
Soziale Beziehungen sind lebenslang relevant, gelten aber für alternde Menschen als besonders hilfreich, weil sie Unterstützung liefern und Geselligkeit versprechen, also Leistungen, die bei nachlassender Gesundheit, eingeschränktem Bewegungsradius und sich reduzierender Aufgaben hilfreich für ein Leben in Zufriedenheit sein können. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden daher verschiedene Formen von Beziehungen älterer Individuen anhand theoretischer Konzepte und empirischer Daten vorgestellt. Dabei werden insbesondere jene Beziehungen fokussiert, die außerhalb familiärer Zusammenhänge liegen, also beispielsweise zu Freundinnen und Freunden.

Die Differenzierung nach Beziehungsarten ist dabei für Zweierbeziehungen leichter zu vollziehen. In Untersuchungen zu Netzwerkerhebungen werden m. E. selten Studien zu spezifischen Beziehungstypen vorgenommen, also nur Freundschaftsnetzwerke untersucht und Beziehungen zu Familienmitgliedern etc. ausgeschlossen. Daher enthalten Studien zu sozialen Netzwerken in diesem Beitrag auch Informationen über Relationen zu Familie und Partner/-in.

Mit der Abkürzung LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Intersexual) werden Personengruppen bezeichnet, die nicht sexuell heteronormativ leben. Die Konzeptionen beschreiben die vergeschlechtliche Identität auf mehreren Ebenen: 1) die soziale Geschlechteridentität, 2) die biologische Zugehörigkeit und 3) die sexuelle Orientierung.

Äquivalent zur Diagnose des Funktionsverlustes von Familie werden auch Freundschaften und andere enge Kontakte regelmäßig als abnehmend beschrieben, zuletzt auch medial stark diskutiert anhand der Daten des General Social Survey von 2004. Hier zeigen McPherson et al. (2006), dass sich die Anzahl der Personen, mit denen wichtige Dinge („important matters“) diskutiert werden, von 2,94 im Jahr 1985 auf 2,08 im Jahr 2004 reduziert. Diese Verkleinerung des Netzwerks wurde medial massiv aufgegriffen, soziale Isolation beschworen (vgl. hierzu auch die Debatte um Putnam 2000) und unter anderem über die vermehrte Nutzung von sozialen Medien erklärt. Wahrscheinlicher ist die Ursache der Abnahme der Quantität enger Kontakte jedoch ein methodisches Artefakt, wie Claude Fischer (2009) beschreibt. Auch der negative Einfluss von sozialen Medien und Internetnutzung auf Freundschaften konnte durch verschiedene Studien widerlegt werden (für einen Überblick siehe Wang und Wellman 2010).

Einbindung wird dabei über einen Index aus folgenden Variablen gebildet: Netzwerkgröße, Anzahl der Personen mit mindestens wöchentlichem Kontakt, Anzahl der Personen mit sehr oder extrem enger emotionaler Bindung, Anzahl der genannten Beziehungsarten im Netzwerk (Schwartz und Litwin 2017, S. 3).
