Zusammenfassung
Die hier vorgestellte kultursoziologische Perspektive innerhalb der soziologischen Wissenschaftsforschung versteht Kultur als kulturelle Praxis, das heißt als über einen geteilten Wissensvorrat gesteuerten Handlungsvollzug. Im Beitrag werden zunächst die so genannten Laborstudien diskutiert, in denen über die empirische Rekonstruktion wissenschaftlicher Praktiken eine kritische Alternative zu traditionellen wissenschaftstheoretischen Positionen erarbeitet wurde. Darauf aufbauend wird anhand von exemplarischen Studien gezeigt, wie wissenschaftliche Praktiken mit gesamtgesellschaftlichen Phänomenen zusammenhängen. Der Artikel schließt mit der Beschreibung wissenschaftstheoretischer Konsequenzen der kultursoziologischen Perspektive auf Wissenschaft, die, bei aller Heterogenität des Feldes, den gemeinsamen Kern der kultursoziologischen Wissenschaftsforschung darstellen.

Es existiert eine umfangreiche Debatte darüber, ob und wie Mertons Wissenschaftssoziologie die Dichotomie zwischen einer internalistischen und einer externalistischen Perspektive bedient und ob diese Unterscheidung ausreichend präzise formuliert wurde (Shapin 1992).
