Zusammenfassung

Die Entstehung und Behandlung von Schmerzerkrankungen wird nach modernen Vorstellungen im Rahmen eines bio-psycho-sozialen Modells verstanden. Dabei werden als pathogenetische Mechanismen nicht ausschließlich somatische Faktoren betrachtet, sondern psychosoziale Mechanismen sowohl für die Genese als insbesondere auch für die Chronifizierung und Aufrechterhaltung der Symptomatik mit verantwortlich gemacht (Kap. „Schmerzchronifizierung“). Zusätzlich haben Behandlerfaktoren sowie die Bedingungen des Gesundheitssystems oftmals ebenfalls einen Einfluss auf die Persistenz des Krankheitsbildes.
