General Information on the Gambia

Like most countries, energy is very important in achieving sustainable development in Gambia. Therefore, the 2014–2018 Energy Policy of the Gambia seeks to ensure efficient, affordable, and environmentally sound energy supply in the country. The Energy Policy also promotes infrastructural development to enhance the secure supply of power.

Gambia has an estimated population of 2,051,363 (CIA 2017) with approximately 3% population growth per year (The World Bank 2016). Agriculture and tourism are the backbone of the Gambian economic growth. The poverty rate in Gambia reduced from 58% in 2003 to 48.3% in 2010 (The World Bank 2017). As at 2017, Gambia’s GDP per capita was $1700 while the GDP growth in 2017 was 3%, but currently, Gambia is saddled with high public debt (CIA 2017).
