General Information on Ghana

Ghana (formerly known as the Gold Coast) is a located in West Africa and it shares boundaries with Burkina Faso to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Togo to the east, and Cote d’Ivoire to the west. It has a total land area of approximately 238,540 km2 and is demarcated into ten administrative regions. Ghana’s estimated population is 27,341,565 made up of 50.9 % male and 49.1 % female, with a 1.82 % increase in the population compared to the previous year in 2015 (Countrymeters 2016). Forty percent of the population are 15 years and below, while the elderly population (65 years and above) accounts for 4.7 % of the total population (Ghana Statistical Service 2013, p. 64). Since 1960, the population of Ghana has more than tripled, and this has implications for energy supply and consumption.
