Abstract
Thermal stabilizers are additives added in small concentrations (between 2% and 5% based on the polymer weight) especially to halogenated polymers to improve their thermal stabilities. Their mechanisms of action depend on the role played by them in protecting the polymer from the deleterious effect of thermal degradation, mainly during the polymer processing. They may work through neutralization or through absorption of the HCl gas evolved as a result of degradation, or through replacement of the labile chlorine atoms on the PVC chains by more thermally stable groups, or through intervening with the degradation products of the polymer.
