Definition
Scleral buckling is an ophthalmic surgical technique that has been successfully employed to repair rhegmatogenous retinal detachments for over 50 years. The scleral buckle alters the shape of the eye, depending on the type of material and explant used to achieve scleral indentation to approximate the detached retina and to achieve functional closure of all retinal breaks, to allow normal physiological processes and to maintain an attached retina.
Encircling buckle is defined as a 360° encircling, circumferential silicon band passed around the circumference of the globe and beneath the rectus muscles.
Indication
An encircling buckle is used in cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with single or multiple defects and also in patients with early proliferative vitreoretinopathy and very extensive scleromalacia.
