Definition

The term feeding is normally referring to the act of supplying food to humans or animals. In manufacturing, this basic understanding of the term is transformed into the concept of supplying machines or manufacturing systems material to work on.

Feeding in manufacturing terms covers a series of suboperations that separate one single component or part from a bulk storage and bring it to a specific position for pickup by the processing machine. In assembly systems this is a particularly important function.

The bulk storage can be ordered or random. In case of random storage, the parts shall be aligned or oriented before reaching its pickup position. There will always be a short distance from the bulk storage to the pickup position. This implies that all feeding systems employ some means of component transportation. Transportation over large distances involving conveyors or similar equipment is normally not looked on as feeders....
