Definition

The term “topography” itself is not strictly defined in the context of metrology but generally understood as a description of the shape and features of a surface. This is based on the use of the term “topography” in geography where it describes the physical properties (elevation, depth, shape) of a small area.

There are definitions for a set of topographical features in EN ISO 25178-2; the topography can thus be understood as the entirety of all topographical features.

Theory and Application

The shape and features of surfaces described in the topography are usually divided into three subcategories that are classified by the wavelength of the features as defined in EN ISO 4287 and EN ISO 16610 for two-dimensional measurements and EN ISO 16610 for three-dimensional measurements. This classification does not separate between wanted and unwanted shapes and features.
