Introduction

Design can be regarded as an action with decision making for finding an acceptable outcome satisfying (usually optimally) a set of specified requirements called design constraints. In general, the design model (design object), the objective function, and the design constraints include various uncertainties. For example, mechanical properties of structural members have variability due to initial manufacturing errors, material deterioration, and temperature dependence (see Fig. 1). Young’s moduli and strengths of concrete exhibiting large variability and strengths of steel indicate not a small uncertainty.
