Abstract

The natural course of idiopathic scoliosis during adult life is neither static nor benign. As the patient gets older, the deformed spinal column may show aggravation of the curves, increasing kyphosis, decompensation, and spondylotic changes. These pathologic changes may cause back pain, radiculopathy, cosmetic, and psychological problems, and cardiopulmonary compromise, possibly leading to increased mortality.
