Abstract
Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) has become the standard procedure for the treatment of end-stage osteoarthritis. The increasing number of primary TKA’s, the high expectations of an active aging population and the decreasing age at implantation, will increase the number of revisions in the years to come.
Comprehensive pre-operative examination and planning has to differentiate between aseptic failure and septic loosening. Bone loss and ligament stability need to be assessed to select a revision implant with sufficient constraint. To achieve optimal functional outcome the joint line has to be restored as exactly as possible.
Revision TKA’s are demanding procedures and should therefore only be performed in specialized centres were an experienced team carries out revisions frequently.
