Abstract
It is generally accepted that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, various types of inflammatory diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. Many investigators report that eliminating oxidative stress results in improved cell viability and prevents of disease progression, based on analyses of cell cultures and animal model studies. These reports indicate that antioxidative materials, such as antioxidative enzymes, antioxidants, and chelating agents, could be useful for disease prevention in humans. A number of clinical studies address the question of whether ROS-mediated diseases can be modulated by antioxidant treatments such as Ebselen and N-acetylcysteine. Dietary supplements such as vitamin C and vitamin E are also used to prevent the oxidative stress. However, numerous clinical trials indicate that the benefits of this approach are minimal or nil, unless a few drugs are used in conjunction with such treatments. In this chapter, we focus on the effect of antioxidants in the treatment of diseases in humans.
