Definition

Actinic keratosis, also known as solar keratosis and senile keratosis, usually presents as hyperkeratotic projections from the skin in sun-exposed areas. They may begin as thick, scaly, or crusty dry bumps on the skin and are a result of solar damage. These lesions have the potential for malignant transformation to SCCs in about 1% of cases. They should be treated with excision, cryotherapy, dermabrasion, topical chemotherapy, and/or laser resurfacing.
