ACC
Definition
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a component of the limbic system, is an area of the brain located just above the corpus callosum. The ACC is involved in many functions, including attention, emotion, and response selection, among others. It’s descending connections to the medial thalamic nuclei and the periaqueductal gray, along with evidence from brain imaging studies, also support a role for the ACC in the descending modulation of pain.
