Definition
The intrusion of fast-frequency EEG Alpha (7.5 – 11 Hz) activity into slow wave sleep (SWS). The SWS is dominated by large and slow EEG waves of Delta type (0.5 – 4.0 Hz); it also characterizes sleep stages 3 & 4.
