Once known as the richest man in the world, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, of Armenian origin, was throughout his life a patron of the arts and welfare work, as well as an avid art collector. He would establish a foundation through his will that would hold his name and art and book collections, as well as a mission focused on his four intended purposes for it – charity, art, education, and science. Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is among the biggest foundations in Europe.

Basic Biographical Information

Born in 1869 in Istanbul, Calouste Gulbenkian belonged to an ancient Armenian family of provincial bankers. He first studied in Calcedonia, then moved to France where he improved his French at high school, and in 1891 he completed his degree in engineering at King’s College in London.
