Definition
Unconventional educational approaches are diverse methods of learning that are not normally included in formal or traditional education settings (Dewey 2015, 17). Because of this, they may enable learners to generate emergent forms of knowledge for themselves (Ingold 2013, 1). Such approaches offer critical means to address transformative challenges such as the climate crisis and may generate “in vivo knowledge” or “transdisciplinary knowledge” that include cultural, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions (Nicolescu 2008, 3). Although unconventional educational approaches may, therefore, produce knowledge between, across, and beyond all disciplines, the creative arts offer a means to explore them (Nicolescu 2008, 15).
