Definition

Transformative education in this entry builds on published works by Mezirow (1978, 2018). It is understood as a process by which individuals acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond ensuring the individual learner is successful in their future careers. It can provide learners with the value orientation, skills, and motivation to contribute to the well-being of the global community. It enables them to contribute to our collective survival during uncertain times by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNESCO 2016a).
