Definition

Coastal cliffs and terraces comprise a predominant portion of the world’s coastlines (Emery and Kuhn 1982). Caves and related geologic features are common components of these landscapes. Karst and pseudokarst processes have repeatedly shaped these complex landscapes over time, leaving physical clues of their mechanisms, such as caves, within a wide range of coastal rock types.

Introduction

The geomorphology of coastal landscapes can provide a wealth of information to coastal engineers, archaeologists, biologists, geoscientists, and resource managers. Modeling the evolution of coastal karst landforms requires correctly identifying these physical clues in order to dissect and reconstruct the geologic record illustrating such processes. Reconstructing complex coastal geomorphologies can further support multidisciplinary studies of associated biodiversity, climate change, and past, present, and future human uses of coastal landscapes.
