Handbook on Promoting Social Justice in Education

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors aim to highlight inequalities and inequities that exist in the PreK-12 educational setting. In addition, the authors identify leadership practices that support equity in schools and offer possible solutions to support the idea that education is truly the great equalizer both nationally and internationally. Keeping with this theme, the authors also emphasize inclusionary practices and analyze several items such as school funding, social justice, and multiculturalism (to name a few), all as they pertain to the overarching goal of this chapter, to both underscore and clearly delineate leadership practices for supporting equity in the PreK-12 educational setting. Finally, the authors share possible solutions for both professors of educational leadership charged with preparing aspiring school leaders in the higher education setting, as well as practitioners such as school leaders currently serving in the PreK-12 educational setting, to implement as it applies to addressing equity concerns in a given school building and/or district.
