Abstract
This updated review covers (a) the intrinsic magnetic behavior of bare porous silicon, (b) the filling of the pores with ferromagnetic metals (Ni, Co, NiCo, Fe) by electrodeposition, and (c) the tunability of the magnetic properties of the nanocomposite. The coercivity, remanence, and magnetic anisotropy are tunable via pore morphology and spatial distribution of embedded metal structures. The degree of magnetic interaction between adjacent metal nanostructures is also key. The ferromagnetic behavior of the nanocomposites, which is present at room temperature, opens the opportunity for new applications such as magnetic sensor technology, data storage, and spintronics.
