Definitions

The ecosystem services are the indirect and/or direct contributions of ecosystems to human well-being, also essential for the survival of other organisms. They have an important role in human survival and quality of life (Brouwer et al. 2013). The research on ecosystem services has grown exponentially during the last decade especially in the coastal areas and oceans. These ecosystems contribute more than 60% of the total economic value of the biosphere (Liquete et al. 2013). Mangrove forests are among the most important and peculiar coastal habitats due to their ecological functions and their socioeconomic value to local communities. These ecosystems are recognized to be very productive, providing goods and services to ecosystems important to human society as well as coastal and marine systems.
