Definitions

Disaster risk:

It is defined by the former UNISDR, UN Office of International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (now UNDRR UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction UN DRR), as “the potential loss of life, injury, or destroyed or damaged assets which could occur to a system, society or a community in a specific period of time, determined probabilistically as a function of hazard, exposure, and capacity”. In the technical sense, it is defined through the combination of three terms: hazard, exposure, and vulnerability (UNISDR 2002)

Disaster risk reduction (DRR):

Disaster risk reduction, always following UNISDR, can be considered as “the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematic efforts to analyse and manage the causal factors of disasters, including through reduced exposure to hazards, lessened vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the environment, and improved preparedness for adverse events” (Munang et al. 2013).
