Definition

Urban water and sanitation refers to the management of water provided for human consumption, and adequate treatment and disposal of human excreta and sewage in the urban environment. A sustainable management of urban water and sanitation must consider the impacts that water supply and sewage discharge and treatment have on surface water and groundwater, preventing the transmission of diseases. It is also oriented to improving the efficiency of water use and the protection of water sources to create resilient and sustainable urban areas, in addition to analyzing the use of alternative water sources, including rainwater and treated wastewater. Having access to water and sanitation is a human right recognized by the United Nations and a priority for the development since the lack of access to water and sanitation services affects human dignity and public health.
